A panic attack creates sudden and repeated surges of an intense and overwhelming fear. The physical symptoms of panic attack include chest pain, dizziness, shortness of breath or abdominal pain. A panic attack makes a person feel very desperate; the patient may also feel that he or she is going crazy or dying. It usually takes a longer time to detect the exact cause of a panic attack. A psychotherapy called cognitive behavior therapy plays a major role in reliving panic attacks; it recognizes the unhelpful patterns of thinking and replaces them with more realistic and helpful thoughts.
One of the important cures for panic attacks is to identify and overcome the possible triggers of the attack. For example if a panic attacks takes place in a car, the sufferer needs to learn to deal with the fear related to driving.
Panic attacks can also be treated through anti-anxiety drugs like valium, atavan or xanax. These medicines suppress the anxiety, stress and fears of people however the patients can get dependent on them which may affect their everyday life. Medication should be the last resort to cure a panic attack if anything else doesn’t help.
